Clinton is a village in Oneida County, New York, and part of Coxe’s Patent, 6th Division. Revolutionary War veterans from Plymouth, Connecticut, lead by Pioneer Moses Foote with seven other families, settled in the area in March 1787 after finding good resources and learned to co-inhabit with the Indians in Brothertown, Southern Kirkland along with Oneida Indians. The village had a gristmill on the Oriskany Creek on College Street the first year and developed a farming and mercantile center.
The Clinton High School, Middle School, and Elementary School are located towards the center of the area along with the businesses and offices of the district. Community events are typically held around the park and organized by The Kirkland Art Center. A local favorite is the Clinton Cider Mill located on Elm Street.
Clinton Arena was home to the Clinton Comets of the Eastern Hockey League until 1973. Some scenes in the movie “Slap Shot” were taken in the famous arena. The hockey program was regarded as the best in New York despite the small school size, earning the team two State Championships.
An annual Clinton Arts and Music Festival is also held, where classic local Clinton bands like The Jellyfish and Eggnogg regularly played.
